Is this the safest bet in world football?
Scottish football has been stuck in the doldrums for some considerable amount of time. Rather than re-start after the enforced break due to lockdown, the Scottish FA decided to finish the 2019/20 league season there and then with Celtic being crowned champions for an 9th successive time. If you were being ultra cynical (and I am most definitely that) you could make the argument that they may as well not bother to have begun it at all given the one-sided nature of the Scottish Premier League this past decade. Even when the league was suspended with 8 matches still to be played, Celtic had established a 13 point lead over Glasgow rivals Rangers and no one could seriously deny them another title. If anything the 2019/20 season was a close one as far as the Scottish top flight goes with previous Celtic sides having won the league by a 30 point margin and no Celtic team has lost more than 5 league games in a season during their current run of 9 in a row. Another league title this year will see them beat their previous record between 1966-1974 when they also won 9 in a row and place them on course for a claim of being the most dominant team in European domestic football ever! At the moment, that record sits with Lincoln of the Gibraltar League who won 14 consecutive titles between 2003-2016. Other notable monopolies in European leagues which have also come to a recent end include BATE Barysau of Belarus who won 13 titles between 2006 and 2018 and Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb have notched 11 straight titles between 2006 and 2016. Of course, Celtic aren't the only club looking to maintain their monopoly in domestic football. Juventus (9) and Bayern Munich (8) are both dominating in what would traditionally be considered more competitive leagues but neither shows any signs of slowing down at this point in time. The side standing in the way of Celtic this afternoon are the mighty Hamilton Academicals who having returned to the top flight in 2014 have been perennial relegation candidates ever since. Having finished 2nd from bottom last season they would have been more than happy that the COVID-19 interruption saw the usual play-off system for promotion and relegation scrapped to ensure they can spend another season getting thrashed by the big boys!
